No study gave these as a pair, so they are not in the card above. But the reason they belong together is settled biochemistry, not a guess, so it is worth knowing.
Hesperidin is hesperetin carrying a rutinose sugar, and it has to lose that sugar before absorption. Gut bacteria in the distal intestine do the cleaving, which is why plasma hesperetin appears hours after a hesperidin dose rather than promptly. Supplying the aglycone directly skips that step and skips the dependence on which bacteria a person carries.
Both flavonoids are heavily glucuronidated and sulfated during passage through the enterocyte and liver, and the sulfotransferases involved saturate at ordinary supplement doses. Taken together each can slow the other's conjugation and raise circulating aglycone. That is a pharmacokinetic interaction measured as plasma levels, not a demonstrated benefit.
Ascorbate can reduce flavonoid phenoxyl radicals back to the parent phenol in solution, which lets the flavonoid participate again rather than degrade. Citrus fruit delivers the two together at meaningful amounts, which is the natural version of the pairing. The recycling is well characterised chemically and its importance inside human tissue is far less certain.
Piperine inhibits UDP glucuronosyltransferase in the gut wall and liver, the same enzymes that clear hesperetin within minutes of absorption. Slowing that clearance raises measured plasma concentrations of many polyphenols. The same inhibition applies to medicines cleared by glucuronidation, so it is not a free upgrade.
Hesperetin is a poorly water soluble aglycone, and phospholipid complexes or lecithin dispersions improve its wetting and micellar uptake. This is the same formulation logic used for other flavonoid aglycones. The measured endpoint is plasma concentration, which is a marker and not an outcome.
Flavonoids with adjacent hydroxyl groups bind iron, and citrus flavanones lower non-heme iron absorption when eaten in the same meal, though less strongly than tea catechins do. Whole citrus complicates this because its vitamin C pushes in the opposite direction. In an isolated supplement without the ascorbate the binding side dominates.
Rutin and citrus flavanones have been formulated together as bioflavonoid complexes for decades and travel the same deglycosylation and conjugation route. Combining them raises total flavonoid load while both draw on the same conjugating capacity. There is no controlled comparison of the pair against either alone in the material available here.
