Ponasterone A is a plant steroid hormone first found in conifers and ferns. Chemically it's very close to the better known 20-hydroxyecdysone, differing by just one hydroxyl group.
In insects, this class of compounds triggers molting. Ponasterone A binds the insect's molting receptor even more tightly than the insect's own hormone does, which is why labs use it as a standard tool to switch genes on in cell experiments.
People don't have the receptor this hormone acts on in insects. That's the reason the well-studied insect biology can't just be assumed to carry over to humans, and any proposed effect in people would have to work through a completely different, far less established pathway.
These plant steroids aren't anabolic steroids and don't attach to the androgen receptor. They share a steroid skeleton but not the biological activity, and they're structurally distinct from human sex hormones.
Where Ponasterone comes from.
It is a plant version of the hormone insects use to moult. Insects have a receptor for it and people do not. It shows up in small amounts inside plant extracts that are sold for their main ecdysteroid, and the label almost never says how much of this one is in there.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Originally isolated from Podocarpus species. Commercial ecdysteroid material comes mainly from Cyanotis vaga, Rhaponticum carthamoides known as maral root, and Ajuga species.
