It is a Mediterranean thistle relative. The leaves and flowering tops are dried, then either ground into capsules or soaked in alcohol for a tincture. It is intensely bitter, and that bitterness is part of how it is meant to work, which is why a capsule and a tea are not doing quite the same thing.
