Ginseng supplies ginsenosides that support normal blood flow and mental stamina, while ginkgo supplies flavonoid glycosides that support cerebral circulation.
American ginseng and berberine both support the body's normal handling of glucose after a meal through separate routes, ginseng by supporting insulin response and berberine by activating the AMPK energy-sensing pathway. Because their actions run on different pathways, the effects can stack, so anyone tracking their glucose closely should account for the combined action.
American ginseng and cinnamon both support the body's normal post-meal glucose response, ginseng through insulin signalling and cinnamon by slowing carbohydrate breakdown and supporting insulin sensitivity. The overlapping direction of effect means the two can compound, which is worth noting when they share a formula.
Chromium is associated with insulin receptor signal amplification while American ginseng ginsenosides slow post-meal glucose appearance, so together they act on normal glucose handling at absorption and at the receptor.

Eleuthero and American ginseng have appeared together in adaptogen blends for decades and neither is botanically Panax ginseng, which is part of why they are grouped. Their constituents differ, with eleutherosides on one side and ginsenosides on the other, so the pairing is additive rather than a case of one enabling the other. No combination trial in the candidate set measures the pair.
Both plants contribute polysaccharide fractions that are studied for effects on immune cell signalling, and they are combined routinely in traditional formulas. American ginseng is Panax quinquefolius, a different species from Panax ginseng, and its saponin profile is characteristically higher in Rb1-type protopanaxadiol ginsenosides and lower in Rg1.
Ginsenosides are triterpenoid saponins carrying sugar chains, which makes them large and poorly absorbed in intact form; absorption of the parent glycosides is low.
Intestinal bacteria remove those sugars stepwise, producing smaller metabolites such as compound K, and interindividual differences in this bacterial conversion are a recognised source of variable response.
Alongside the saponins, the root contributes a water-soluble polysaccharide fraction, and aqueous extracts concentrate that fraction while ethanol extracts concentrate the ginsenosides.
Where American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) comes from.
The roots grow under shade for years, then get washed and dried. From there they are either ground into powder or soaked in alcohol and water to pull out the active saponins, which are then dried into an extract with a measured strength on the label.
