Glycyrrhizic acid from licorice root blocks 11-beta-HSD2, leaving cortisol active at the mineralocorticoid receptor so the kidney retains sodium and loses potassium in the urine. This is directional, not a boost: sustained licorice root intake pulls potassium down.
Marshmallow root delivers mucilage that sits on the mucosal surface, and licorice root constituents act on the mucus and bicarbonate that surface secretes. Barrier from outside plus secretion from inside is the reason the two share a formula.
Slippery elm hydrates and coats the gut lining, while licorice root acts on the lining's own protective secretions. Neither substitutes for the other, so soothing blends usually carry both.
Glycyrrhetinic acid inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2, letting cortisol act at the mineralocorticoid receptor so the kidney sheds more potassium and magnesium. Keeping magnesium intake up offsets that loss.
The same effect drives sodium and water retention. Extra sodium moves normal fluid balance the same way.

Licorice slows conversion of cortisol to cortisone and so extends its tissue action, while ashwagandha is used to bring circulating cortisol down. They meet on the same hormone from opposite ends.
Licorice flavonoids support mucus and bicarbonate output while aloe polysaccharides add a physical film. Two different routes to the same protective layer.
Glycyrrhizin gives slow-onset lingering sweetness and steviol glycosides give fast-onset sweetness. Together they round the curve and mask botanical bitterness at a low total load.
Glabridin is a flavonoid of Glycyrrhiza glabra root, so whole root and a glabridin extract deliver the same molecule. Combining them raises that one constituent rather than adding a mechanism.
Glycyrrhetinic acid inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 in the kidney, letting cortisol act at the mineralocorticoid receptor and driving sodium retention with potassium loss. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice and zinc carnosine appear together in formulas positioned around the normal gastric mucous layer, each with its own separate literature. Licorice flavonoids and the mucin-supporting rationale for zinc carnosine are different mechanisms reaching the same tissue. No combination trial supports the pair.
Glutamine is the preferred fuel of the intestinal epithelium and supports normal mucosal turnover, while licorice preparations are used for the mucus layer that sits above it. The two work on adjacent parts of the same barrier. The pairing is conventional and mechanistically coherent, not trialled together.
Licorice and chamomile have been combined in European digestive infusions for centuries and both are used for normal digestive comfort. Chamomile contributes apigenin and its own volatile fraction. The pairing is traditional and has not been isolated in a controlled study.
Enteric peppermint oil acts on smooth muscle tone while licorice preparations act on the mucosal side, so the two cover different parts of digestive comfort. They co-occur in many digestive formulas. The rationale rests on separate single-ingredient literatures.
Ginger and licorice sit together in a large number of traditional East Asian and European digestive formulae, where licorice is the near-universal harmonising herb. Ginger contributes gingerols with their own gastric motility literature. The combination is traditional practice with no isolated controlled evidence.
Glycyrrhizin is a saponin glycoside that gut bacteria hydrolyse to glycyrrhetinic acid, which is the form that actually enters circulation, so the microbiota sits directly on the activation step. A fermented milk combining Lactobacillus paracasei with Glycyrrhiza glabra has been studied clinically, though a combination design cannot separate the two contributions.
Astragalus and licorice appear together in many classical Chinese formulae, where licorice is used to harmonise and moderate the other herbs. Both contribute polysaccharide and saponin fractions studied for effects on normal immune signalling. The basis is documented traditional use, not a controlled trial of the pair.
Licorice accompanies Panax ginseng in a large share of traditional tonic formulae, both plants supplying triterpenoid saponins. Licorice's classical role is to moderate and unify the formula rather than to lead it. This is a documented traditional convention.
Angelica sinensis and licorice are paired in classical blood-tonifying formulae, with licorice again in its harmonising role. The pairing is documented in materia medica rather than in trials. Read it as traditional formulation practice.
Both appear in formulas positioned around normal liver function, silymarin with the larger human literature. The two are chemically unrelated, a flavonolignan and a triterpene saponin. There is no combination evidence and the pairing is a product-design choice.
Licorice supplies its own flavonoids, liquiritigenin, liquiritin and glabridin among them, and quercetin adds a structurally related flavonol. All are cleared through the same conjugation enzymes. The overlap is compositional and metabolic rather than a demonstrated synergy.
Both are long-used culinary plants that appear together in cardiovascular-positioned formulas. Their mechanisms are unrelated. Given that whole licorice affects sodium and potassium handling, this particular pairing needs the deglycyrrhizinated form or a stated glycyrrhizin limit.
Ascorbate regenerates oxidised phenolic radicals, which applies to the licorice flavonoids including glabridin. This is a solution-phase chemistry that holds for polyphenols generally. Whether it changes anything measurable in a person taking both has not been tested.
Both licorice flavonoids and curcumin are heavily glucuronidated on first pass and therefore draw on the same conjugation capacity. They also co-occur in many digestive and joint comfort formulas. The shared clearance route is established metabolism and is flagged so the pairing is not read as a straightforward addition.

Glycyrrhizin is the saponin behind licorice's sweet taste, and it's the marker most whole-root extracts get standardised to, so it's the number you'll usually see on a label.
Glycyrrhizin barely gets absorbed intact. Your gut bacteria clip two sugar acid units off it first, and the resulting glycyrrhetinic acid is what actually reaches your bloodstream and carries the pharmacology.
Glycyrrhetinic acid slows a kidney enzyme that normally switches cortisol off. With that enzyme slowed, cortisol sits on a salt-handling receptor, so you hold more sodium and water and lose more potassium in urine. This is the one thing to know about whole root.
DGL is licorice with the glycyrrhizin stripped out, usually to under two percent, which takes that salt-handling pathway off the table while keeping the flavonoids. So DGL and standardised whole root are two different ingredients with different handling, not two versions of one.
Where Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza) comes from.
The root is dug up after three or four years, dried, and soaked in hot water or in alcohol. Water pulls out the sweet compound, alcohol pulls out more of the flavonoids. One extra processing step removes that sweet compound entirely, and what is left is sold as DGL, which behaves quite differently from the plain extract.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
