Marshmallow mucilage and aloe inner-leaf acemannan are both water-binding polysaccharides that raise luminal viscosity. Each gels at a different concentration, so the blend stays viscous across a wider dose range.
Marshmallow works physically, coating the mucosa with mucilage, while chamomile's apigenin and bisabolol act on smooth muscle tone and local signalling. The mechanisms are independent, which is why the two have been combined in soothing preparations for a long time.

The standard handling is to separate a mucilage dose from a mineral dose by an hour or more.
The same viscosity that gives marshmallow root its soothing quality slows solute movement in the intestinal lumen. A calcium dose taken in the same swallow may be absorbed more slowly as a result. Spacing removes the issue without changing either dose.
Berberine already has poor oral bioavailability, and adding a viscous mucilage to the same dose slows its diffusion further. There is no chemical antagonism between the two, only a physical one. Separating them by an hour keeps the berberine dose intact.
Supplemental enzymes rely on contact with their substrate to act, and a viscous gel slows the mixing that makes that contact happen. The interaction is physical rather than a matter of enzyme inhibition. It is a timing question, not a compatibility one.

Bifidobacteria ferment a range of plant polysaccharides. The prebiotic potential follows from the chemistry; whether a typical marshmallow dose is large enough to matter has not been established.
L. plantarum carries a broad set of carbohydrate-utilising genes and ferments plant polysaccharides that many other species cannot. Marshmallow mucilage arrives in the colon undigested. The pairing is a plausible synbiotic construction rather than a tested one.
Both are non-digestible plant polysaccharides that reach the colon intact, though inulin ferments quickly while mucilage is a bulkier, more slowly fermented material. Combined, they broaden the substrate range available to the resident population. More rapid fermentation also means more gas, which sets the practical dose.

Butyrate is the main energy source for colonocytes and is normally generated by bacterial fermentation of fibre. Marshmallow root comes from Althaea officinalis, a plant in the mallow family. What defines it is mucilage, a set of big slippery plant sugars that make up a large fraction of the dried root.
Those sugars soak up many times their weight in water and turn into a thick gel. The gel coats the moist linings it touches, which is the physical basis of the soothing effect and why the plant shows up in throat and gut comfort blends.
This works at the surface, not through your bloodstream. Big plant polysaccharides don't get absorbed whole from the gut, so whatever marshmallow root does, it does on the surfaces it touches on the way through.
Your own digestive enzymes can't break these plant sugars apart, so the mucilage reaches the colon intact and gut bacteria can ferment it there. That's the general chemistry of soluble fibre you can't digest.
Where Marshmallow Root comes from.
It is a marsh plant root, dug up in autumn and dried gently. Gentle matters: too much heat wrecks the slippery compounds that are the whole reason people use it. Soaked in cool water it turns thick and slimy, and that slippery layer is what coats a sore throat or an irritated gut lining. Soaked in strong alcohol instead, most of that goes away, so a tincture is a different thing rather than a stronger one.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
A perennial marsh mallow of damp European and western Asian ground, cultivated commercially in eastern Europe. Roots are lifted in autumn from second-year or older plants, when mucilage content is at its seasonal peak.
Lifted roots are washed, the outer cork layer is often removed, and the root is cut into pieces. Peeled root is paler and is graded separately from unpeeled material.
Roots are dried at controlled low temperature. Excess heat degrades the polysaccharide chains that carry the demulcent property, so drying temperature is a quality-determining step rather than a formality.
Dried root is either milled to a cut or powdered grade, or macerated in cold to lukewarm water so the mucilage hydrates and dissolves without heat damage.
Extract lots may be assayed for total polysaccharide content or characterised by swelling index, the pharmacopoeial measure of how much a defined weight of root expands in water.
Finished material ships as cut root for infusion, milled powder for capsules, a carrier-dried aqueous extract for tablets and lozenges, or a hydroalcoholic tincture that carries a different constituent profile.
