In a melon-containing meal both are present together already. This is standard redox chemistry rather than a clinical outcome. The pairing describes chemistry inside the food, not a benefit measured in people.
Beta-carotene from melon is cleaved by beta-carotene 15,15'-dioxygenase in the gut wall to retinal, then reduced to retinol. Conversion is regulated by vitamin A status, so a person who is already replete converts less. Food-matrix carotenoid is absorbed less completely than an oil-dispersed isolate. The relationship is precursor to product, not two separate actives.
Carotenoids partition into mixed micelles before uptake by enterocytes, and micelle formation requires dietary fat and bile. Carotenoids share micellar incorporation and transporter-mediated uptake, so a large dose of one carotenoid can lower the absorbed fraction of another taken at the same time.
