Hovenia preparations are used around alcohol intake, and the toxic intermediate in that setting is acetaldehyde rather than ethanol itself. NAC raises the cysteine pool that glutathione synthesis draws on, which supports handling of aldehyde and oxidant load. The two act at different points of the same sequence, so the pairing is complementary rather than redundant.
Dihydromyricetin acts at the same GABA-A receptor site that ethanol and benzodiazepines potentiate, and in animal work it behaves as an antagonist there rather than an agonist. Combining it with anything that increases GABAergic tone gives two agents pulling in opposite directions at one receptor. The direction of the net effect in people has not been established.
Valerian constituents increase GABAergic tone while dihydromyricetin appears to act in the other direction at the benzodiazepine site. Stacking them creates an unpredictable net effect on alertness rather than a reliable one. This is a reason to keep them separate rather than a pairing worth building.
Anyone reaching for a Hovenia product is, by definition, in a drinking context, and that context depletes thiamine through reduced intestinal uptake and higher excretion. Restoring thiamine addresses a real depletion that the botanical does nothing about. The two cover different problems in the same situation.
Ethanol acts as a diuretic and drives magnesium loss in urine, which is one reason electrolytes shift after a heavy drinking session. Magnesium repletion addresses that loss directly. It sits alongside a Hovenia extract rather than overlapping with it.
