English elm and slippery elm are both Ulmus species whose inner bark yields a polysaccharide mucilage that swells in water. Slippery elm is the material that actually carries the monograph history and the supply chain, so where English elm appears it is usually as a botanically adjacent substitute. Buyers should note that the two are not interchangeable on a certificate of analysis. Species identity should be confirmed by the supplier.
Both materials work by hydrating into a viscous polysaccharide gel rather than by any absorbed constituent. Combining them raises the viscosity of the preparation, which is the whole point of a demulcent blend. This is long-standing formulation convention in herbal practice. The mechanism is physical, so it does not depend on anything reaching the bloodstream.
Elm bark mucilage and psyllium both form viscous solutions in the gut lumen and their effects on viscosity stack.
