Traditional texts describe hiccups, dizziness and nausea following Quisqualis fruit, particularly when it is taken with hot drinks. Warming carminatives were the standard companion for exactly this reason. Ginger acts on gastric motility and nausea signalling by its own route. This is a tolerability pairing from practice, with no controlled work behind it.
Licorice appears in a large fraction of classical East Asian formulas as a harmonising and sweetening agent, and Quisqualis-containing preparations are no exception. The role is palatability and formula convention rather than pharmacology. Note that licorice glycyrrhizin has its own effects on potassium and blood pressure at sustained intake. That caveat belongs to licorice, not to Quisqualis.
The classical caution attached to shi jun zi is not to take it with hot tea, an instruction repeated across sources because of reported hiccups and stomach discomfort. This is one of the few negative pairings the tradition states explicitly rather than by omission. The underlying chemistry has not been worked out, and tannin interaction is a plausible but untested explanation. Worth flagging as a caution.

Quisqualic acid, first isolated from and named after this plant's seed, is an excitatory amino acid compound that activates certain glutamate receptors in the nervous system. It's used as a lab research tool in neuroscience.
Because it activates excitatory receptors and is used experimentally to damage nerve cells in research, the seed's main named compound belongs to a class with real neurological activity, not a benign nutritional one.
