Juncus effusus pith appears in traditional East Asian evening decoctions, and chamomile fills the same role in European practice. Blends combine them on that basis. No controlled work has tested the pair together, and the mechanisms proposed for each are different. Read the combination as customary.

Both botanicals are used in evening formulas and both are described traditionally as calming. Melatonin acts on MT1 and MT2 receptors to shift sleep timing, which is a defined mechanism. Soft rush has no such defined mechanism in humans. Combining them means the melatonin does the work while any drowsiness from the botanical adds on top. The practical note is about next-morning grogginess rather than benefit.

What Soft rush actually does.

The white pith inside the stem contains a distinctive group of compounds called phenanthrenes. Labs use them to check the plant is what it says it is.

Only the soft white centre of the stem is the part traditionally used. A product made from the whole stem is not the same thing.

Where Soft rush comes from.

Soft rush is a marsh plant. The part used is the soft white centre of its stem, dried and either simmered into a tea or soaked in alcohol to make a stronger extract. Those two versions are not chemically the same.
