Trans-11 vaccenic acid is desaturated by stearoyl-CoA desaturase into cis-9,trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid, the main CLA isomer in ruminant fat. A meaningful share of the rumenic acid in tissue comes from this conversion rather than from direct intake. So the two are not independent inputs, they are one pathway sampled at two points. Conversion efficiency varies between individuals and is not fixed.
Vaccenic acid exists because rumen microbes partially biohydrogenate dietary linoleic acid, leaving trans-11 as an intermediate. In human tissue both fatty acids feed into stearoyl-CoA desaturase and into the same lipid pools. High linoleic intake shifts the composition of those pools. Read this as pathway sharing rather than a demonstrated interference at supplement doses.
Both are incorporated into the same erythrocyte and membrane phospholipid pools, so raising one shifts the percentage composition of the other even when absolute amounts do not change. Anyone reading a fatty acid panel needs to know that percentages move against each other by arithmetic. The effect on any outcome is a separate question from the effect on the panel.
Any unsaturated fatty acid preparation oxidises on exposure to air, light and heat. Tocopherols are the conventional in-pack protection and are added to essentially every oil-based softgel. This is manufacturing practice, not a physiological synergy in the person taking it.
Free fatty acids and their esters need an emulsifier to disperse in an aqueous product or to form a stable softgel fill. Lecithin is the usual choice in non-soy formulations. The role is formulation, and it does not change what the fatty acid does once absorbed.
Butyric acid and vaccenic acid are both characteristic components of dairy fat, which is why they get discussed together in dairy nutrition. They have no shared metabolic pathway in the person consuming them. The association is dietary co-occurrence and nothing more.

This is a specific trans fat with an unusual double bond position, and it's chemically different from industrial trans fats like elaidic acid even though both are technically trans fats.
It forms in the stomachs of grazing animals when gut microbes partly convert plant fats, which is why you find it in dairy fat and meat from cattle and sheep and basically nowhere else.
Our bodies and those of grazing animals can convert this fat into a specific conjugated linoleic acid using the same enzyme that works on stearic acid.
Because it's a natural trans fat, lab tests that add up total trans fat will count it the same as manufactured trans fats even though where it comes from and how the body handles it are different.
Where Vaccenic acid comes from.
It is made by the bacteria in a cow's or sheep's stomach part-way through breaking down the fats in its feed, then ends up in the milk. People get it from butter, cheese and beef. The body turns some of it into CLA.
The same molecule is reached more than one way. Which route a given product used is a manufacturing choice, and the finished compound is the same either way.

Rumen bacteria add hydrogen across the double bonds in steps. Trans-11 octadecenoic acid is the intermediate that accumulates when the process stops short of full saturation.
