Both compounds bind and cross-link proteins at a surface, which is what produces the tight, drawn feeling people describe as astringency. Combining them in one topical does not add a new mechanism, it simply raises the tannin load on the same tissue. That also raises the chance of dryness or irritation with repeated use. The relationship is chemical rather than clinical.
Polyphenol tannins of the kind found in witch hazel bark chelate ferrous and ferric iron, and the resulting complex is not taken up well from the intestine. This matters only for oral preparations, since topical use does not reach the gut. Anyone taking an iron supplement alongside a tannin-rich oral botanical should separate the two by a couple of hours. The interaction is a well-described absorption effect, not a claim about outcomes.
Witch hazel works at the surface by tightening protein at the tissue interface. Vitamin C works from the inside as the cofactor that lets collagen strands hydroxylate and cross-link properly. The two act at different levels and neither depends on the other, so the pairing is complementary rather than synergistic in the strict sense. Read it as formulation logic supported by established biochemistry.
Witch hazel leaf carries flavonol glycosides alongside its tannins, rutin among them. Formulators often pair the two because they sit on the same side of vascular and surface support, one applied topically and one usually taken by mouth. The combination is conventional in European herbal practice. Evidence for the pairing itself, as opposed to each part separately, is thin.
EGCG and hamamelitannin are both galloylated polyphenols, so they compete for and cover the same protein binding sites when applied together. Layering them increases astringency and also increases the staining and dryness that come with heavy tannin exposure. There is no separate mechanism gained. Formulators usually pick one as the astringent lead rather than stacking both.
Tannins bind protein indiscriminately, and a protein powder taken at the same time as a tannin-rich oral botanical will bind some of it before either is absorbed. Neither is harmed, but the effective dose of both drops. Spacing them apart avoids the issue entirely. Again this applies only to oral use.
Witch hazel distillate dries the surface, particularly when it carries alcohol as a preservative. Aloe gel holds water at the surface and offsets some of that drying. The pairing is standard in toners and after-sun products for exactly that reason. It is a texture and tolerability decision more than a pharmacological one.
Topically, zinc oxide sits on the surface as a physical barrier while witch hazel acts chemically on surface protein, and the two are routinely combined in barrier ointments. Orally the picture is different, because tannins chelate divalent zinc the same way they chelate iron and reduce its uptake. Which direction applies depends entirely on the route. Say which route is meant before calling this a synergy.

Witch hazel is a shrub from eastern North America. The clear liquid sold in pharmacies is distilled and has almost no tannins in it, mostly alcohol and water. The bark extracts are the tannin-rich version, and they behave quite differently.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Wild-harvested and cultivated shrub native to eastern North America. Dormant twigs cut in winter are the classic feedstock for distillate, while leaf collected in season is the usual source for tannin extracts.
Twigs are steam distilled and the aqueous distillate is collected. Tannins are non-volatile and stay behind in the still, which is why the distillate has a very different chemistry from the plant it came from.
Bark or leaf is macerated in ethanol and water, which pulls hamamelitannin, gallotannins and flavonol glycosides into solution.
