Benzoic acid absorbed from benzoin resin is cleared mainly by conjugation with glycine in the liver, forming hippuric acid that leaves in urine. Glycine availability is what allows that route to keep pace when benzoate intake is repeated. This is a metabolic dependency rather than a performance claim, and it matters most for people already taking benzoate-containing preparations.
Benzoic acid is only active against microbes in its undissociated form, so the fraction that works falls as the surrounding pH rises. An alkalising agent in the same preparation shifts that equilibrium and changes what the resin does in situ. The direction is predictable from the pKa and does not depend on any clinical study.
Both are plant resins rich in benzoate and cinnamate esters, and they turn up together in throat sprays, balms and incense blends. The overlap is chemical family and film-forming behaviour, not a demonstrated combined effect in people. Anyone sensitive to balsams tends to react to both, so pairing them raises exposure rather than lowering it.
Compound benzoin tincture has been dropped into hot water alongside volatile oils such as peppermint for steam inhalation for well over a century. The pairing is a convention of preparation, not a tested combination. Both are aromatic irritants at close range, so the combined vapour load is the practical consideration.

Benzoin is a resin tapped from Styrax trees, made mostly of benzoic acid, cinnamic acid and related compounds, with small amounts giving it its scent.
Free benzoic acid is a well-established antimicrobial. It works in acidic conditions, where the molecule crosses microbial membranes and lowers the pH inside the cell.
Once absorbed, benzoic acid gets combined with glycine in the liver and leaves the body in urine. Taking in a lot repeatedly uses up some of your glycine supply.
Resins like this one are known to trigger skin reactions in some people. Cross reaction with balsam of Peru and similar resins happens often enough that allergy testing panels group them together.
Where Benzoin comes from.
It is tree sap. You cut the bark, the tree seals the wound with a sticky resin, and once that hardens someone scrapes it off and grades it by hand.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
