The plant most often sold as Bishop's weed contains compounds that absorb UVA light and bind to DNA, which is why it can cause skin burns in sunlight and why a similar mechanism is used in certain light based medical treatments.
These compounds block a gut enzyme the same way grapefruit juice does. Anything normally cleared by that enzyme can build up to higher levels in your blood if taken alongside this plant, and the effect can last after the plant itself has left your system because the enzyme has to be rebuilt.
If the fresh sap touches your skin and then hits sunlight, it can cause a delayed burn like reaction with blistering and long lasting skin discoloration where it touched. This is a direct reaction between the chemical and light, not an allergy, and can happen the very first time.
Ajwain, also called Bishop's weed in South Asia, is a completely different plant. Its seed oil is mostly thymol, which disrupts microbial membranes in lab studies and relaxes gut smooth muscle in isolated tissue samples. None of the light sensitizing chemistry of the other plant applies here.
