Typha pollen sits in a traditional category concerned with bleeding and blood movement, and modern pharmacology has not resolved which direction its constituents push. Pairing it with anything that affects clotting deserves attention rather than assumption. No human trial has measured the combination. Read this as a caution flag, not a recommended pairing.
Flavonoid and tannin content is the reliable part of the cattail phytochemical picture, and those compounds bind non-haem iron before absorption. Spacing an iron dose from a tannin-bearing botanical by a couple of hours sidesteps the question. The effect is on iron in the same meal only.
Cattail pollen delivers quercetin-class flavonoid glycosides as part of its native constituent profile. Combining it with isolated quercetin stacks intake of the same compound class rather than adding a different mechanism. Whether the stacked intake does anything useful has not been measured.
When a flavonoid-rich botanical and non-haem iron share a meal, ascorbate partly protects the iron from being bound. This is a mitigation of an interaction rather than a benefit of cattail. The offset is partial and depends on the relative amounts.
In traditional practice Pu Huang is a formula component, almost never used alone. Pairings of this kind reflect centuries of practice convention, not controlled comparison. Nothing here has been tested against either herb given by itself.

Cattail refers to a group of related wetland plants, and the part traditionally used is the dried pollen, not the root, shoot or leaf.
The pollen contains flavonoid compounds along with plant sterols and fatty acids, and the flavonoids are the compound group most consistently found across different analyses.
This plant grows with its roots in wetland sediment and is even used industrially to pull metals and other contaminants out of water and soil, which means material harvested from an uncontrolled wetland can carry whatever contamination was present at that site.
Its flavonoid compounds aren't absorbed well in their original form. Most get broken down at the gut wall or fermented by colon bacteria into smaller compounds, so blood levels of the original compound stay low.
Where Cattail comes from.
That brown hot-dog-shaped spike on a pond plant. The part used medicinally is the yellow pollen dust from the top of it, gathered by hand in a short window each year. Two things to know before buying. The plant is used industrially to pull pollutants out of dirty water, so where it grew matters a great deal. And most of the published science on cattail is about farm feed or wetland cleanup, not about people taking it.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Pollen is collected from the upper male portion of the flowering spike during a short seasonal window, mostly by hand.
Collected pollen is sieved to remove floral debris and dried. This is a mechanical separation rather than a solvent extraction.
For the charred preparation the dried pollen is dry-fried until darkened, which changes its constituent profile.
Meaningful quality control here means confirming Typha species identity and testing for heavy metals, given that the genus accumulates contaminants from its growing water.
