The pairing is a formulation convention in energy products rather than a change in caffeine pharmacokinetics. Anyone sensitive to stimulants should still count the total caffeine load across the day.
The polyphenols in cola nut bind non-heme iron in the gut lumen and form complexes that the intestine absorbs poorly. This is the same chemistry that makes tea and coffee lower iron uptake from a meal. Separating a cola nut product from an iron supplement by roughly two hours limits the overlap. Heme iron from meat is much less affected.
Cola nut is not a separate stimulant sitting alongside caffeine. It is a caffeine source, so adding isolated caffeine anhydrous on top raises the same total dose. The additive effect shows up as higher heart rate and a modest short-term rise in blood pressure. Tannins in cola nut are astringent and can irritate an empty stomach in some people. Raising gastric pH changes tannin solubility and the subjective astringency. This is a comfort observation rather than a change in caffeine delivery. Caffeine absorption is largely unaffected by gastric pH because it is absorbed across a wide pH range.
Caffeine has a mild diuretic action at higher intakes, which increases urinary loss of several minerals including magnesium. The effect is modest and largely offset by habitual intake in regular caffeine users. It is worth noting for people combining high-stimulant products with low dietary magnesium. This describes a mineral-handling effect, not a clinical deficiency.
