Work on gorse processing waste shows the lignocellulosic material can feed bacterial cultures, and that adding 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole steers those cultures toward the human-active cobalamin rather than pseudo-B12. That is a production route, not something that happens in a person taking gorse. The link is between the plant as feedstock and the vitamin as fermentation output. Nobody should read it as gorse being a source of B12 on its own.
Gorse shoots are largely lignocellulose, a slowly fermented fibre, while inulin ferments fast in the proximal colon. Mixing fast and slow substrates spreads fermentation further along the bowel. This is general fibre biology and is not specific to Ulex europaeus. Gorse has no meaningful record as a human fibre supplement.
Colonic bacteria convert fermentable fibre into acetate, propionate and butyrate, and supplemental butyrate delivers the end product directly. Feeding the substrate and supplying the product are two routes to the same molecule. Gorse in particular is a high lignin, low readily fermentable material, so its contribution would be modest. The mechanism is settled, the ingredient-specific quantity is not.
Polyphenol and phytate content in leguminous plant material chelates ferrous and ferric iron before it reaches the transporter, which lowers absorption from the same meal. Separating an iron supplement from a tannin-rich botanical by a couple of hours is the standard workaround. This applies to the plant material broadly rather than to any single gorse constituent. It is a reason for timing, not for avoidance.
Vitamin C reduces ferric iron to ferrous and forms a soluble complex that resists precipitation by polyphenols. Taken with a tannin-containing plant material it recovers part of the iron that would otherwise be bound. The effect is dose dependent and does not fully cancel high polyphenol loads. This is standard nutrition chemistry applied to a tannin-bearing botanical.
