No study gave these as a pair, so they are not in the card above. But the reason they belong together is settled biochemistry, not a guess, so it is worth knowing.
Indian mallow and marshmallow root are both mucilage-bearing plants whose polysaccharides swell in water into a slippery gel. Taken together in a tea or capsule, the total viscosity of the mixture rises, which is the property herbalists are after. This is a physical effect on the gut surface, not a pharmacological one, and it has not been measured head to head in people.
Slippery elm bark is the reference demulcent in Western herbal practice and Indian mallow fills the same slot in Ayurvedic practice. Combining them raises the mucilage load without raising the dose of any single plant. Read the pairing as traditional formulation rather than as a clinically measured combination.
Psyllium is a well characterised viscous soluble fibre and Indian mallow mucilage behaves the same way in water. Stacked, the gel layer is thicker and stomach emptying slows further. The practical consequence runs in both directions: the intended coating is stronger, and co-ingested nutrients or medicines may be absorbed more slowly, so spacing them by two hours is the usual practice.
Indian mallow preparations carry tannins and other polyphenols, and tannin binding of non-heme iron is settled chemistry. An iron supplement swallowed with a strong decoction is presented to the intestine in a less soluble form. Separating the two by a couple of hours removes the problem. This is a general property of tannin-rich plant material rather than something specific to this species.
Divalent minerals bind to plant polyphenols and get trapped in viscous polysaccharide gels. Both features are present in Indian mallow preparations. The effect is on timing rather than on total intake, so a zinc dose moved away from the herb is unaffected.
Licorice root appears alongside mucilaginous herbs in both Ayurvedic and Western formulas, usually for palatability and for its own soothing reputation. There is no controlled human work on the combination. Note that licorice carries its own blood pressure and potassium considerations at sustained doses, which do not disappear in a blend.
Ayurvedic formulation logic pairs cooling mucilaginous herbs with a small amount of a warming spice to offset the perceived heaviness. Ginger is the usual choice. The rationale is traditional formulation practice, and no human data describes what the combination does.
