What Lactalbumin is, and what it does.

- Suits people already using protein who want the tryptophan-rich fraction, and anyone building an evening protein. It's a milk protein, so dairy avoiders need something else.

Alpha-lactalbumin is one of the two major proteins in whey, making up roughly a fifth of the protein in bovine whey alongside beta-lactoglobulin. Isolated alpha-lactalbumin is simply that fraction concentrated. Anyone already taking whey is getting some, just at a much lower share of total protein.
Alpha-lactalbumin carries an unusually high tryptophan content relative to the other large neutral amino acids, which is the whole basis of interest in it for sleep and mood work. Tryptophan competes with those other amino acids for the same brain transporter, so a protein with a favourable ratio raises the share that gets across. Adding free tryptophan on top of it stacks the same input rather than adding a second mechanism.
Casein clots in the stomach and empties slowly, while alpha-lactalbumin stays soluble and clears fast. Taken together the casein fraction blunts the sharp amino acid peak that makes alpha-lactalbumin distinctive. For an evening tryptophan-ratio purpose the two work against each other, though as general protein they simply add up.
Myo-inositol plus alpha-lactalbumin has been tested as a set combination, with the alpha-lactalbumin included to improve inositol absorption in people who respond poorly to inositol alone. The rationale is delivery rather than a second active effect. Evidence sits in a small number of trials, so read it as preliminary.
Both appear in pre-sleep products, magnesium for its role in neuromuscular function and alpha-lactalbumin for its tryptophan ratio. No direct interaction between them is established. The pairing is formulation convention.
L-theanine acts directly on cortical activity, while alpha-lactalbumin works upstream through amino acid supply to serotonin synthesis. They are different routes to a similar intent, not a documented interaction. Combined products exist but the combination itself has not been isolated in trials.
Once tryptophan reaches the brain it is hydroxylated then decarboxylated to serotonin, and that decarboxylation needs P5P, the active form of B6. B6 does not increase how much tryptophan arrives, it supports what happens after. Supplying tryptophan without adequate B6 leaves the conversion step short of its cofactor.
Alpha-lactalbumin holds a single tightly bound calcium ion, and that ion is what keeps the folded structure stable against heat and acid. Removing the calcium shifts the protein into a molten globule state. It is a structural fact about the ingredient rather than a reason to co-dose calcium.
Both are minor whey proteins isolated from the same starting material and both appear in infant formula and immune-oriented products. They have separate mechanisms, lactoferrin through iron binding and alpha-lactalbumin through amino acid profile. Products combining them do so because the source stream makes it convenient.
Alpha-lactalbumin is the regulatory subunit of lactose synthase, the enzyme complex that makes lactose in the mammary gland. Isolated alpha-lactalbumin powders still carry residual lactose depending on the purification grade. People who react to lactose should check the grade rather than assume a purified whey fraction is free of it.

This protein helps direct an enzyme to attach a sugar to glucose to form lactose, acting as a regulatory partner rather than doing the work itself.
It has a higher ratio of one particular amino acid to others that share the same transport route into the brain, and that ratio is what determines how much of that amino acid actually gets in.
That particular amino acid reaching the brain is the limiting input for making a certain neurotransmitter, since the enzyme that makes it isn't maxed out under normal conditions.
A single bound calcium ion holds this protein's folded shape together, and losing it produces a partly unfolded state used in food science research.
Where Lactalbumin comes from.
It comes from cheese-making leftovers. The liquid whey gets filtered down and then split into its individual proteins, and alpha-lactalbumin is the one pulled out and dried.
Made from an animal material. Species and tissue are the things worth knowing, and both belong on a label.
The liquid left after casein is coagulated out of cows' milk, which carries the whey proteins in dilute solution.
Ultrafiltration and microfiltration concentrate the whey proteins and remove lactose, minerals and water.
Alpha-lactalbumin is separated from beta-lactoglobulin using selective precipitation at controlled pH and calcium level, or by ion exchange chromatography.
Material is assayed for alpha-lactalbumin content and blended to a declared purity grade, commonly 40, 60 or 90 percent.
The purified fraction is spray dried to a soluble powder for capsules, sachets or blends.
