Work in rodents has linked the GABA content of Microcos paniculata leaf to its activity in a seizure-threshold model, which places the plant on the same neurotransmitter axis as supplemental GABA. Whether orally taken GABA from either source crosses the blood-brain barrier in humans in useful amounts remains contested. The pairing is mechanistic and animal-derived. It is not human evidence for a combined effect.
L-theanine influences GABAergic and glutamatergic tone and is commonly used for a calm-alert state. Microcos leaf material has been characterised as carrying GABA and flavonoids with reported central activity in animals. If both are taken together, any drowsiness is likely to add rather than cancel. That matters for driving and machinery and is the reason to flag the pairing at all.
Magnesium is a physiological blocker at the NMDA receptor channel and a positive influence on GABA-A signalling, which is established receptor pharmacology independent of any botanical. Combining it with a plant characterised by GABA content puts two inputs on the same inhibitory system. Ascorbate regenerates oxidised flavonoid radicals back to their reduced form, which is standard antioxidant chemistry across polyphenol-bearing plants.
