Premna microphylla leaf is used in China to make a green tofu-like gel, and that gel sets because the leaf's low-methoxyl pectin crosslinks with calcium ions. Traditional preparation adds plant ash or lime for exactly this reason. Without a calcium source the pectin stays in solution and the gel does not form.
The functional fraction of the leaf is pectin, so pairing it with supplemental pectin is adding the same class of molecule from two sources. Both are fermented in the colon and both raise viscosity in the upper gut. The pairing adds quantity rather than a new mechanism.
Both raise the viscosity of gut contents and both hold water, which together increase stool bulk and soften it. The effects add up, and so does the gas and bloating ceiling if the total load climbs too fast. Fluid intake needs to rise with either of them.
Pectin is fermented in the colon by bacteria carrying pectinolytic enzymes, and bifidobacteria participate in the resulting cross-feeding chain. Supplying substrate alongside organisms is the standard synbiotic pairing. What actually happens depends on the flora already in place.
Pectin fermentation yields short-chain fatty acids including butyrate, which colonocytes use as fuel. A direct butyrate supplement delivers the same molecule immediately, while the fibre produces it gradually and further down the colon. The two overlap in destination rather than complementing each other.
Pectin raises luminal viscosity and its free carboxyl groups bind divalent cations, both of which lower iron uptake from the same meal. It is a general soluble fibre effect and it is modest. Spacing a mineral dose a couple of hours from a fibre-heavy serving removes the question.
The same carboxyl groups that let pectin gel with calcium also bind zinc. The direction is a small reduction in uptake when taken together. Separate the doses if mineral repletion is the point.
Both are soluble, viscosity-building polysaccharides, and combining them raises viscosity more than either alone at the same total weight. In a food that helps texture. In the gut it also slows gastric emptying more, which is worth knowing if someone already finds fibre heavy going.

That pectin needs calcium or other minerals to gel, unlike the other main pectin type which needs high sugar and low acidity, which is why the traditional recipe adds plant ash or lime rather than sugar.
