Alnus bark is astringent precisely because of its condensed tannin content, and condensed tannins bind non-haem iron in the intestinal lumen and reduce its uptake from the same meal. This is the same interaction documented for strong tea and for other high-tannin botanicals. Anyone taking an alder bark preparation and an iron supplement should separate them by a couple of hours. The interaction belongs to the tannin fraction, not to any alder-specific compound.
Condensed tannins bind protein through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction, which is literally the chemistry that turns hide into leather and the reason astringent botanicals dry the mouth. Given with a protein supplement, tannin-rich bark forms complexes in the gut lumen. Whether this meaningfully reduces amino acid availability at ordinary bark-tea amounts has not been quantified. Flagging it is more useful than ignoring it.
Ascorbate reduces ferric to ferrous iron and forms a soluble chelate that resists tannin binding, which is why vitamin C is the standard counter to polyphenol inhibition of non-haem iron. In a meal containing a tannin-rich bark preparation, adding ascorbate partly offsets the effect. This does not fully cancel a heavy tannin load. It is a mitigation, not an erasure.
Red alder bark contains oregonin, a diarylheptanoid structurally related to the curcuminoid family and the compound most cited in Alnus rubra phytochemistry. Diarylheptanoids as a class have been examined for redox and phase II handling in laboratory systems. Silymarin is a conventional companion in that context. Both sides of this pairing rest on in vitro chemistry, and no human work supports it.
