Why these belong in the same formula. Each row says what the basis is, from settled biochemistry through to a trial that measured the pair.
Cistus preparations are dense in condensed tannins, and tannins hold non-heme iron in complexes the small intestine absorbs poorly. Ascorbic acid taken in the same meal reduces iron to the ferrous state and keeps a larger share of it available for uptake. The interaction is well described for tannin-rich plant beverages in general. It is a chemistry effect at the meal level, not a claim about iron status over time.
Rock rose infusions carry the same class of polyphenols that make strong tea a known inhibitor of non-heme iron uptake. Taken alongside an iron supplement, the two meet in the stomach and form complexes that are absorbed poorly. Separating the infusion from the iron dose by a couple of hours is the usual formulation answer. Heme iron is much less affected than non-heme forms.
Plant polyphenols and tocopherols sit in different compartments, water and lipid, and the aqueous phenolic can hand an electron back to an oxidised tocopherol at the interface. Cistus polyphenols behave like other flavonol and tannin mixtures in this respect. The evidence is chemical and cell-free rather than clinical. Read it as a mechanism, not as an outcome anyone has measured in people.
Both are tannin and flavan-3-ol rich, so stacking them raises total polyphenol load and total mineral binding in the same meal. There is no reason to expect the two to cancel each other. The practical consequence is a larger effect on non-heme iron than either alone. Astringency also stacks, which matters for a drinkable format.
Tannins bind proline-rich and globular proteins and precipitate out of solution, which is why milk cuts the astringency of strong tea. Adding whey to a Cistus beverage reduces perceived dryness and also reduces the pool of free polyphenol available to bind minerals. Whether that changes anything downstream in the body is not established. It is a real and predictable formulation effect on the drink itself.
Condensed tannins bind digestive enzymes non-specifically in test-tube systems and reduce their activity. Pairing a high-tannin herbal extract with a supplemental enzyme blend in the same capsule works against the enzyme. The magnitude in a real, food-containing gut is uncertain and probably smaller than in vitro figures suggest. Separating the two in a regimen avoids the question entirely.
Rock rose infusions are astringent and are commonly blended with mint or other aromatics for palatability. This is a taste and compliance pairing rather than a pharmacological one. No shared mechanism is claimed. The pairing is formulation convention.
