Ailanthone and related quassinoids are cytotoxic at higher concentrations and are metabolised in the liver. Traditional formulations pair such botanicals with hepatic-support herbs. There is no trial testing this combination and the rationale is entirely mechanistic.

Bark preparations from this tree carry substantial tannin, which forms insoluble complexes with non-haem iron and lowers absorption. Where Tree of heaven comes from.

It is the bark of a fast-growing tree originally from China that now grows wild almost everywhere. The bark is intensely bitter and contains compounds that are toxic to cells at higher concentrations, which is both why it has a traditional use and why the dose has always been kept small. Root bark and stem bark are not the same material, so the label needs to say which one is inside.
