What Vetiver is, and what it does.

Does it work
Suits people who use aromatherapy or scented topicals as part of an evening routine. It isn't an oral nutrient and doesn't fill a dietary gap.
How much to take
No oral dose figure is on record, and this isn't an ingredient to take by mouth. In topical use it is diluted into a carrier oil at fractions of a percent.
Time to feel it
The scent lands immediately and lingers longer than most, because sesquiterpenes are heavy and slow to evaporate. Beyond aroma, nobody has measured a time course.

You notice the smell, deep and rooty, and it stays on skin or fabric for hours. There's no systemic effect to expect on day one.
With regular use
Repeated use is a habit rather than an accumulation. Long-term effects in people have not been measured, in aromatherapy use or any other.
How well tolerated
Skin reactions are the main consideration and are likelier with oxidised oil, so keep it sealed, cool and dark. Dilute before skin contact and keep it away from eyes.
How it feels
Smoky and earthy, close to damp soil and old wood. People tend to find it grounding in the evening, which is a scent experience rather than a measured effect.
The overlooked benefit
The roots hold soil together and pull metals out of contaminated ground, so where the plant was grown decides the trace-metal profile of the root material.

Vetiver + LavenderEstablished aromatherapy formulation practice: vetiver is a base-note fixative that slows the evaporation of lighter top notes.

Vetiver oil is dominated by high-boiling sesquiterpenes, which gives it very low volatility. Blended with a volatile monoterpene oil such as lavender, it holds the lighter aroma in place for longer. This is a physical fixative role in the blend, not a claim that either oil does more in the body. It is why vetiver appears in so many blends at small percentages.

Vetiver oil is a concentrated non-polar liquid that will not disperse in water. A medium-chain triglyceride carrier dilutes it to a usable concentration and spreads it evenly across a dose or a skin application. Without a carrier, contact is with undiluted oil, which is the main cause of skin irritation reports. The pairing is dilution practice, nothing more.

Vetiver + Vitamin EEstablished oxidation chemistry: terpene-rich oils oxidise on air exposure, and tocopherol is the standard lipid-phase antioxidant used to slow it.

Sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenols in vetiver oxidise slowly to aldehydes and epoxides once the bottle is opened. Tocopherol added to the oil phase intercepts the chain-propagating radicals that drive that. The result is a longer usable shelf life and less of the oxidised fraction, which is the fraction most associated with skin sensitisation. This is a stability role in the product, not a benefit in the user.

Vetiveria zizanioides is used in soil remediation precisely because its roots take up and hold divalent metals, and copper uptake under mycorrhizal inoculation has been examined directly. Divalent metals compete for the same root transporters, so soil zinc and copper affect each other. The practical point is agronomic: root material grown on contaminated ground can carry metal load, which is a sourcing question for anyone using the root rather than the distilled oil.

Vetiver oil comes from the root, not the grass above ground, and is made up almost entirely of sesquiterpene compounds, with khusimol and the vetivones being the main markers.
