Where Western Mugwort comes from.

Western mugwort is a silvery prairie plant of the same family as ragweed and chamomile, which is the first thing to know if you get hay fever. It is not the same species as the mugwort burned in moxibustion, even though the studies that come up are mostly about that practice, and burning a plant near your skin has nothing in common with swallowing it. Its volatile oil contains thujone, the compound that got absinthe regulated, and that is what sets the limit on how much of any mugwort preparation is sensible. There is no human research on taking this species by mouth. It has a long history as a herb that brings on menstruation, so it is one to avoid in pregnancy.
