Fern rhizomes in this group carry condensed tannins and phenolic acids that bind divalent iron in the gut lumen. Anyone taking iron alongside a tannin-rich decoction should separate the two by a couple of hours. This is a general property of the tannin class rather than something measured for this species specifically. The direction is well established, the magnitude here is not.
Ascorbate is the standard counter to tannin-driven iron inhibition, because it keeps iron in the reduced, more absorbable state and competes with polyphenol binding. Where a tannin-rich botanical is taken with a meal that is meant to supply iron, adding a vitamin C source blunts some of the loss.
