Woodwardia + IronWoodwardia rhizome is a tannin-bearing fern rhizome, and tannins chelate non-heme iron into complexes the intestine absorbs poorly.

Fern rhizomes in this group carry condensed tannins and phenolic acids that bind divalent iron in the gut lumen. Anyone taking iron alongside a tannin-rich decoction should separate the two by a couple of hours. This is a general property of the tannin class rather than something measured for this species specifically. The direction is well established, the magnitude here is not.

Woodwardia + Vitamin CAscorbate reduces ferric iron to the ferrous form and partly overrides polyphenol inhibition of non-heme iron absorption.

Ascorbate is the standard counter to tannin-driven iron inhibition, because it keeps iron in the reduced, more absorbable state and competes with polyphenol binding. Where a tannin-rich botanical is taken with a meal that is meant to supply iron, adding a vitamin C source blunts some of the loss. This is textbook nutrition rather than anything specific to this fern. It does not fully cancel the effect.

Woodwardia + Vitamin B1 (thiamine)Thiaminase activity is documented in several fern species and degrades thiamine in raw plant material.

Thiaminase has been characterised in bracken and some other ferns, where it cleaves thiamine and lowers its availability. Whether Woodwardia carries meaningful thiaminase activity has not been established, so this is a genus-level caution and not a measured finding. Heating deactivates the enzyme, which is one practical reason fern rhizomes are used decocted rather than raw. Read it as mechanistic and provisional.

Woodwardia + Licorice rootTraditional Chinese formula practice, where licorice is the conventional harmonising and taste-moderating addition to bitter or astringent rhizome decoctions.

Licorice is added to a large share of classical decoctions to soften harshness and improve palatability, and tannin-heavy fern rhizomes are exactly the kind of material it is used with. The pairing is documented as formulation convention across the tradition. It is not a pharmacological synergy in the modern sense. Note also that licorice has its own mineralocorticoid effect at sustained doses, which is the real caution in any long-term pairing.

Woodwardia + Digestive enzymesTannins bind and precipitate proteins, and digestive enzymes are proteins.

Polyphenol tannins precipitate protein indiscriminately, which includes supplemental protease, amylase and lipase preparations taken at the same time. Taking a tannin-rich decoction with an enzyme capsule lowers the activity of the enzymes before they get to work. Separating the two avoids it. This is straightforward protein chemistry.

Woodwardia is a chain fern, and it is the underground stem that gets used, boiled up as part of a larger herbal formula in East Asian practice. It is tannin-rich, which is why it interferes with iron and protein absorption if you take them together. The bigger practical issue is that several different ferns get sold under the same names, so knowing what you actually have is the hard part. Nobody has run trials on it by itself.
