Beech + Bifidobacterium longumBeechwood xylan is the industrial feedstock for xylooligosaccharides, and bifidobacteria carry the xylanase and beta-xylosidase activity needed to ferment those chains.

Xylooligosaccharides sold as prebiotics are made by hydrolysing xylan from beech wood. Bifidobacteria are among the few gut genera equipped to break the xylose backbone down, so the pairing is substrate plus the organism that can use it. This is a fermentation-substrate relationship, not evidence of a clinical outcome.

Beechwood xylooligosaccharides are xylose based and ferment fast in the proximal colon. Inulin is fructose based and ferments further along.
