Blackhaw (Viburnum prunifolium) and cramp bark (Viburnum opulus) share a bark chemistry built around scopoletin, aesculetin and related coumarins. The pairing is traditional convention rather than a tested combination. No controlled human work compares the blend against either bark alone.
Magnesium competes with calcium at voltage-gated channels and at the contractile apparatus of smooth muscle. Blackhaw bark is used traditionally in the same smooth muscle context, though its own activity rests on tradition rather than trial data. Blackhaw bark carries condensed tannins, and tannin-iron complexation in the intestinal lumen is textbook chemistry. Non-heme iron taken alongside a tannin-rich bark preparation is less available for absorption. Spacing the two by a couple of hours removes the overlap. This is an absorption interaction rather than a toxicity concern.
Ascorbate keeps iron in the ferrous state and competes with polyphenols for it, which is why it is the standard counter to tannin-rich beverages and botanicals. Taken with a tannin-containing bark preparation and an iron source, it recovers part of the lost absorption. The size of the recovery depends on the tannin load, which varies widely between bark batches. It does not remove the interaction entirely.
Willow bark delivers salicin, which is converted to salicylic acid and dampens platelet aggregation. Blackhaw is reported to carry salicin-type compounds as well, so stacking the two raises the total salicylate exposure. Anyone already on an antiplatelet or anticoagulant should regard this as additive rather than neutral. The salicin content of blackhaw is not well quantified across commercial material.
Chamomile contributes apigenin and related flavones, blackhaw contributes coumarins and bitter constituents. Traditional practice pairs them in preparations aimed at cramping and general calm. The rationale is compositional and historical, not trial-based. Read the pairing as convention rather than a demonstrated combination effect.
Bark decoctions carrying tannins and bitters can sit heavily on an empty stomach. Ginger is the standard traditional corrigent added to soften that. It changes tolerability, not the activity of the bark. This is formulation practice with a long history and little formal measurement.

Where Blackhaw comes from.
It is the bark of a North American shrub. It is dried, then either ground into capsules or soaked in alcohol and water to make a tincture. Nobody measures a specific active compound, so what you get varies between batches and brands.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
