Tannin-iron complexation in the intestine is textbook chemistry and applies to any tannin-containing root or rhizome taken with iron. Spacing an iron dose a couple of hours from the herb resolves it. This is a timing point rather than a reason to avoid either.

Where Blue Flag comes from.
It is the underground stem of a North American wetland iris. It is dug up, dried and left to age, because the fresh root is harsh on the stomach. Then it is ground into capsules or soaked in alcohol. Nobody measures an active compound in it, and the amount that upsets the stomach is not far above the amount traditionally used.

Rhizomes are lifted in late summer or autumn, washed and dried. Drying and subsequent ageing reduce the harshness of the fresh resin fraction, which is why traditional texts insist on dried material.
Dried rhizome is milled for capsules or macerated in ethanol and water for tincture and fluid extract. Ethanol pulls the resinous fraction more strongly than water does.
