Torreya kernel oil is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, and those double bonds are exactly what peroxyl radicals attack during storage. Tocopherol interrupts that chain reaction, which is why it is present natively in most seed oils and added to the rest. The pairing protects the material rather than doing anything in the person.
Rosemary extract and tocopherol protect an oil through complementary chemistry, one regenerating and metal-chelating, the other chain-breaking. Combining them extends the induction period of a polyunsaturated oil further than either alone. This is standard oil-processing practice.
Torreya seed oil carries unusual non-methylene-interrupted polyunsaturated fatty acids of the sciadonic type, and those compete with conventional omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for the same desaturase and elongase enzymes and for incorporation into membrane phospholipids. The result is a shifted membrane fatty acid profile rather than simple addition. That shift is a compositional marker, and what it means for a person has not been established.
A seed oil serves as both the solvent and the absorption vehicle for a fat-soluble carotenoid, which is why carotenoid softgels are filled in oil. The catch is that the vehicle must be protected from oxidation or it takes the carotenoid down with it. Pair a polyunsaturated carrier oil with an adequate antioxidant system when carotenoids are along for the ride.
