Chlorella growth factor is the nucleotide and peptide rich fraction pulled out of chlorella biomass, so the two are the concentrate and its source rather than independent ingredients. Taken together the nucleic acid content overlaps instead of adding a separate mechanism.
Chlorella and Arthrospira are reviewed side by side because their water-soluble fractions carry overlapping peptides, pigments and nucleotide material. The two are commonly formulated together for nutrient breadth rather than for a single shared target. The grounding is a review of both organisms, not a combination trial.
CGF is concentrated in nucleotides and nucleosides, and putting those to use in DNA and RNA synthesis depends on B12 and folate driving the one-carbon cycle that supplies methyl and formyl groups. Supplying preformed nucleotide material without the cofactors leaves the pathway limited elsewhere. Note that chlorella's own B12 content includes inactive corrinoid analogues, so it should not be counted as a B12 source.
Tetrahydrofolate derivatives donate the carbons for purine ring closure and for thymidylate synthesis. Dietary nucleotides such as those in a CGF extract enter through the salvage route and spare that demand rather than replace it. The relationship is textbook nucleotide biochemistry.
Glutamine is a preferred fuel of the small intestinal mucosa and also donates nitrogen to purine and pyrimidine synthesis. Dietary nucleotides from a hot-water algal extract feed the same rapidly dividing tissue through the salvage pathway. Both relate to mucosal turnover, which is why they turn up in the same gut formulas.
The CGF fraction contributes free amino acids and short peptides but at gram amounts too small to count as a protein source. Pairing it with a complete protein covers total intake while the algal fraction supplies its nucleotide and peptide material. The rationale is nutritional composition, not a pharmacological interaction.
Chlorella biomass carries non-heme iron, and a hot-water extract retains part of the water-soluble mineral fraction. Amounts vary with the growing water and the extraction, so an extract is a contributor to iron intake rather than a reliable measured dose. Anyone already taking an iron supplement should count it in the total.
Ascorbate reduces ferric iron to the ferrous form and holds it soluble at intestinal pH, which raises absorption of plant-source non-heme iron in the same meal. Applied to an algal extract, this affects the iron that travels with the extract. The mechanism is settled iron chemistry and says nothing about the extract's other components.
Hot-water chlorella extracts carry oligosaccharides and peptide material that reach the colon undigested and can be fermented. Whether that measurably shifts a probiotic's persistence has not been shown in people. Early, and formulation-led rather than evidence-led.
Lactoferrin and dietary nucleotides both appear in the literature on mucosal turnover, drawn from milk composition research. Combining them addresses gut lining maintenance from two different directions. There is no combination evidence for chlorella growth factor specifically.

Chlorella growth factor is not a single molecule. It is the water-soluble fraction released when Chlorella biomass is held in hot water, and it is characterised by nucleotides and nucleosides, free amino acids and short peptides, sugars and water-soluble vitamins.
Dietary nucleotides are taken up by the intestinal mucosa and enter the salvage pathway, which recycles preformed bases into nucleotides at a lower energy cost than building them from scratch. Tissues with fast turnover, including gut lining and immune cells, rely most on salvage.
Chlorella's rigid cellulosic cell wall resists human digestion, so the biomass is mechanically or enzymatically disrupted before use. Hot-water extraction both breaks the wall further and separates the soluble interior from the insoluble wall material, which is why a CGF extract and whole chlorella powder are compositionally different products.
Vitamin B12 measured in chlorella preparations includes corrinoid analogues that bind the B12 assay but do not serve human B12-dependent enzymes, so an algal extract cannot be counted as a source of usable B12.
Where Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) comes from.
Chlorella is a single-celled green alga with a tough wall. To make CGF, growers break that wall open and steep the cells in hot water, which pulls out the water-soluble insides: building blocks of DNA and RNA, amino acids, short peptides and sugars. The leftover wall material is filtered off and the liquid is concentrated or dried. Since CGF is named after the method rather than one ingredient, two products can differ in what they contain.
Produced by a cultured organism rather than harvested. The strain is selected and the conditions are controlled, so batches sit closer together than a field crop.
Chlorella vulgaris or Chlorella pyrenoidosa grown photoautotrophically in open ponds or closed photobioreactors, or heterotrophically on a sugar feed in fermenters.
Cells are concentrated by centrifugation, then the cellulosic wall is broken by bead milling, high-pressure homogenisation, sonication or enzyme treatment so the interior becomes accessible.
The disrupted biomass is held in hot water, which releases nucleotides, nucleosides, free amino acids, peptides and soluble sugars into the aqueous phase. This step is what defines CGF.
Insoluble wall material and debris are removed by centrifugation and filtration, leaving the clarified soluble extract.
The extract is concentrated and graded, most often by solids content and sometimes by nucleic acid or total nucleotide content; there is no single industry-wide marker.
