Cowslip root carries triterpene saponins that raise bronchial secretion volume, while thyme contributes volatile phenols with a different action on the airway. Products in Europe are almost always formulated as the pair rather than as cowslip alone, so most of what is known about cowslip in people comes from combination products. Licorice and cowslip appear together in older European cough formulations, each contributing saponins that reduce surface tension in airway mucus. The combination is traditional rather than trial-tested. Licorice at sustained intake affects mineralocorticoid signalling and potassium handling, which is the practical limit on how long such a blend is used. Anyone with elevated blood pressure should count the licorice content, not the cowslip.
Marshmallow root supplies high-molecular-weight mucilage that coats irritated throat tissue, a physical effect. Cowslip works from the other direction by thinning secretions lower down. Cowslip root saponins are the main source of the nausea and stomach upset reported at higher doses. Taking the preparation with food, which is when enzyme products are used, blunts that. This is a tolerability convention, not a claim that the two act on each other biochemically.
