Ficus religiosa bark and leaf carry flavonoid glycosides and condensed tannins. In redox chemistry ascorbate donates an electron to the flavonoid radical formed after it quenches an oxidant, which returns the flavonoid to its active state. This is measured in chemical and cell systems, not as a clinical outcome in people taking the two together. Read it as mechanistic support for co-formulation rather than evidence of an added effect.
Tannin-rich botanical extracts reduce the fraction of non-heme iron taken up when both are in the stomach at the same time. Ficus religiosa bark is one of the more tannin-dense parts of the plant, so the same chemistry applies. Separating the two by a couple of hours is the usual formulation answer. This is an absorption interaction, not a statement about anyone's iron status.
Zinc shares the same vulnerability as iron to polyphenol chelation, though the affinity is lower. A tannin-heavy bark preparation taken alongside a zinc dose can lower the absorbed fraction of that dose. The size of the drop depends on the tannin load and the meal it sits in. Spacing the two is the practical handling.
Many flavonoids in Ficus species are cleared fast by phase II conjugation, which keeps plasma levels low and short. Piperine slows that conjugation and raises exposure to the parent compound for several polyphenols studied directly. Whether Ficus religiosa flavonoids behave the same way has not been measured. The same inhibition also raises exposure to medicines a person is already taking, which is the reason to be deliberate about it.
Flavonoid aglycones from Ficus extracts are lipophilic and dissolve poorly in gut fluid. Complexing them with phosphatidylcholine is the standard way to raise apparent solubility, and it has raised plasma levels for other botanical phenolics. No published phytosome pharmacokinetics exist for this species specifically. The pairing is a formulation convention rather than a demonstrated gain here.
Curcuminoids and Ficus flavonoids both shift Nrf2 into the nucleus in cultured cells, which raises transcription of glutathione-handling enzymes. Combining them in one formula is common in traditional Indian preparations. Nobody has shown that the combination does more in people than either alone. Count this as a rationale for pairing, not a demonstrated additive effect.
Tannins form hydrogen-bonded complexes with proline-rich and other proteins, which is why tannin-heavy plant material lowers measured enzyme activity in feed and rumen work. A protease or amylase blend taken in the same capsule as a tannin-dense bark extract can lose activity before it reaches its substrate. Separate dosing avoids the issue. The effect size depends heavily on the tannin fraction of the specific extract.

Flavonoid glycosides in the plant aren't absorbed intact, gut bacteria strip off the sugar, and it's that freed piece that actually crosses into the gut wall, so a person's gut microbiome changes how much circulating compound they get from the same dose.
Once absorbed, those freed compounds are quickly modified in the gut wall and liver, so the levels of the free, unmodified compound in blood stay low and short-lived relative to how much was swallowed.
