No study gave these as a pair, so they are not in the card above. But the reason they belong together is settled biochemistry, not a guess, so it is worth knowing.
Both supply high molecular weight polysaccharides that hydrate into a viscous layer over irritated mucosa. Combining them thickens that layer rather than adding a second mechanism. European monograph traditions place both in the same demulcent category, which is why they appear together in throat preparations.
Slippery elm bark mucilage behaves much like the lichenan fraction in Iceland moss, coating tissue physically rather than acting through a receptor. Stacking the two raises the viscosity of the preparation. Neither depends on absorption, which is unusual and is part of why the pairing is coherent.
Licorice contributes its own demulcent character and masks the bitterness of the lichen acids, which is a real formulation problem with this ingredient. The constraint it imports is glycyrrhizin, which at sustained intake affects potassium and blood pressure. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice removes that constraint and most of the sweetness with it.
Thyme brings volatile aromatics and its own phenolics to a preparation whose action is otherwise purely physical. The two contribute different properties rather than reinforcing one. The pairing is formulation convention with a long record and no controlled comparison.
Lozenge design depends on holding the active in the mouth long enough for local contact, and a mucilage base does exactly that. Zinc lozenge effects depend on free ionic zinc being released in the mouth, so the base chemistry matters. A base that binds the zinc ion would work against it, which makes this a formulation question to verify rather than assume.
Propolis brings flavonoids and a resinous character, Iceland moss brings the film-forming polysaccharide. They coexist in commercial products for complementary reasons. Propolis carries a real allergy consideration for people sensitised to bee products, which the combination does not remove.
Viscous soluble fibre reduces the absorption of minerals taken alongside it by trapping them in the gel phase. Iceland moss delivers a substantial soluble polysaccharide load when taken as a decoction or powder rather than as a lozenge. Spacing mineral supplements a couple of hours away from it is the straightforward answer.
Both form viscous gels in the gut, and taking them together raises total viscosity and slows gastric emptying more than either alone. That amplifies the delay in absorption of anything else taken at the same time, including medication. Adequate fluid with both is not optional.
