That is a formula-construction rule from a specific medical tradition, not a pharmacological finding. No controlled human work has separated the contribution of either herb in such a pairing. Anyone encountering this combination should understand it as tradition rather than as tested pharmacology.
Licorice root is added to most classical decoctions to soften bitterness and to moderate what the tradition regards as harsh herbs. It is not a specific pairing with oldenlandia so much as a general formula rule. Licorice carries its own pharmacology, including glycyrrhizin effects on potassium and blood pressure with prolonged use at dose. That means the harmonising herb is itself the more pharmacologically active component of the pair in many cases.
Both sit in the clearing category of the traditional framework and appear together in formulas built on that logic. The grouping reflects a classification system rather than a shared measured mechanism. Neither herb individually has strong controlled human data at the doses used in decoction. The pairing is documented convention and should be read that way.
Oldenlandia carries iridoid glycosides, flavonoids and anthraquinones, several of which are poorly absorbed intact and heavily metabolised by gut bacteria before they ever reach circulation. Curcumin has the same problem for the same reasons. Combining two poorly absorbed polyphenol sources does not solve the absorption problem for either. This is a shared limitation rather than a synergy.
The glycoside forms that the plant actually contains are poorly absorbed. Gut bacteria cleave the sugar and release the aglycone, which is the form that crosses the intestinal wall. That means the composition of a person's microbiota partly determines what they get from the herb, which is one reason botanical responses vary between people. Whether adding a specific probiotic strain changes that conversion has not been demonstrated for this herb.
Charcoal binds a wide range of organic compounds including plant glycosides and reduces how much of them is absorbed. Taking it near any botanical extract lowers the delivered dose of that extract. The interaction is general to charcoal and applies to essentially every orally taken active. Separating the two by several hours avoids it.
