Mitchella repens is a tannin-bearing herb, and condensed tannins bind non-heme iron in the gut into a poorly absorbed complex. Taking an iron supplement with a strong infusion of the herb lowers the absorbed fraction. Separating the two by a couple of hours avoids most of the interaction. This is a general tannin effect rather than something specific to this plant.
Ascorbic acid reduces ferric iron to the ferrous form and holds it soluble against polyphenol binding. Adding vitamin C to a meal containing a tannin-rich herbal infusion partly restores non-heme iron uptake. The effect is well characterised for tea and coffee polyphenols and applies to tannin-bearing herbs generally. It does not eliminate the binding, it blunts it.
Squawvine appears alongside raspberry leaf in nineteenth-century Eclectic and later folk formulas aimed at the same use. Both are astringent, tannin-bearing leaf materials, so the pairing stacks astringency rather than adding a distinct action. The combination rests on tradition and shared plant chemistry, not on trials of the pair. Anyone who is pregnant should raise either herb with their own clinician before use.
Traditional herbal practice pairs a demulcent mucilage with a strongly astringent herb to soften the drying, puckering quality on mucosa. Marshmallow root polysaccharide coats surfaces that tannin would otherwise tighten. The pairing is a formulation convention with a long record and no controlled data behind it.
