Raspberry leaf is tannin-rich, and condensed tannins bind non-heme iron in the gut lumen into complexes the enterocyte cannot take up. Taking the two at the same sitting lowers how much of the iron dose is absorbed.
The glycine chelate keeps iron coordinated as it passes the gut lumen, so it is less exposed to the tannin binding that lowers uptake of simple iron salts. Where a formula must carry both, the chelated form is the more sensible pairing.
Ascorbate reduces ferric to ferrous iron and holds it in a soluble complex, which offsets much of the tannin binding that otherwise blocks non-heme iron absorption. It is the standard co-ingredient when a tannin-rich leaf sits in a mineral formula.
Raspberry leaf is tannin-rich, and hydrolysable and condensed tannins complex divalent cations in the intestinal lumen. That lowers the fraction of a calcium dose absorbed when the two are taken at the same time. Separating the infusion from a mineral dose by a couple of hours is the ordinary way round it.
Zinc absorption is reduced by polyphenol-rich beverages through the same lumen-level complexation that affects iron and calcium. A strong leaf infusion taken with a zinc supplement puts the two in contact at the point of absorption. The interaction is about timing, not about either ingredient being unsuitable.
Magnesium is a divalent cation and is subject to the same tannin complexation that reduces iron and calcium uptake, though it has been measured less often. In prenatal-style stacks the leaf and the mineral are frequently taken at the same time of day. Spacing them apart costs nothing and removes the question.
Rubus leaves carry ellagitannins, which are hydrolysed to ellagic acid and then converted by specific gut bacteria into urolithins. Only part of the population carries the bacteria that complete that conversion, which is why the same intake gives very different urolithin exposure between people. Whether a supplied strain confers that ability is untested; the biochemistry itself is settled.
Urolithin A is the downstream microbial metabolite of the ellagitannins found in Rubus material, not an independent compound. Taking the metabolite directly bypasses the conversion step that many people cannot perform. The pairing is precursor and product in the same pathway, so the two are alternative routes to the same exposure rather than additive inputs.
Nettle and raspberry leaf are the two most common components of traditional women's herbal teas and are usually sold blended. Both are mineral-bearing leaves used as nutritive infusions rather than for a single target constituent. The basis is preparation tradition.
Chamomile flower is a standard partner in raspberry leaf infusions, added for flavour and for its own calming reputation. Apigenin and related flavones are unrelated to the leaf's tannins. This is a blending convention, not a measured interaction.
Ginger is the usual companion in teas taken for stomach comfort in early pregnancy, where raspberry leaf is more often used later. Gingerols and leaf tannins have no described chemical interaction. The pairing is habitual rather than tested.
Pyridoxine appears alongside raspberry leaf in products aimed at the same life stage, typically for stomach comfort. The two do not interact chemically. This is a formulation convention and belongs on the label as such.
Folate is a standard component of any product aimed at pregnancy, and raspberry leaf is often blended into the same range. There is no described chemical interaction between the leaf and the folate salt. Co-formulation is the whole basis.
Cranberry proanthocyanidins and raspberry leaf tannins are both condensed polyphenol chemistry and the two appear together in women's urinary blends. Neither is standardised against the other. The pairing sits on shared category convention.
