Burdock contributes inulin and polyacetylenes, stillingia contributes diterpene esters and a resin fraction, so the chemistry is unrelated. Stillingia root is acrid and irritating to mucosa, and traditional liquid preparations blunted that with sweet demulcent herbs. Licorice served that role in the historic syrups. It is a compounding decision about tolerability, not a pharmacological pairing. Licorice brings its own potassium and blood pressure considerations at sustained doses.
