Hawthorn fruit, which is what tejocote is, carries oligomeric procyanidins and tannins. Those bind non-heme iron in the intestine and lower the fraction that reaches the transporter. Anyone building iron status is better served taking the two a couple of hours apart. This is a lumen-level binding effect, not a change in how iron is handled once absorbed.
