Traveler's Joy + Vitamin EEstablished chemistry of protoanemonin and its precursor. The reactive lactone formed on tissue damage is an electrophile that reacts with thiols and lipids.

Fresh Clematis tissue releases protoanemonin, a blistering lactone, when cells are crushed. Tocopherol does not neutralise it. Anyone handling or formulating the fresh plant should understand that drying, not antioxidants, is what converts protoanemonin to the far less reactive anemonin dimer.

Traveler's Joy + L-CysteineProtoanemonin is a Michael acceptor and reacts readily with free thiol groups.

The reactive lactone in fresh ranunculaceous plants forms covalent adducts with sulfhydryl groups, which is the chemical basis of its irritant action and its depletion of cellular thiols. Cysteine and glutathione are consumed in that reaction rather than protecting against it in any useful way at supplement doses. This is a caution, not a pairing.
