Turmerones are lipophilic sesquiterpenes that co-occur with curcuminoids in the whole rhizome and are stripped out during curcuminoid purification. Several formulation approaches add the essential oil back to a curcuminoid extract, and laboratory work reports higher curcuminoid solubility and permeability when the oil is present. The size of the effect in people is not settled and depends heavily on the specific formulation.
Turmerones are oil-soluble and essentially insoluble in water. Dosing them in a medium-chain triglyceride carrier keeps them dissolved through the stomach and feeds them into normal lipid absorption. Taking an aqueous turmeric preparation on an empty stomach does the opposite.
Phospholipid complexes disperse oil-soluble constituents into mixed micelles rather than leaving them as undispersed droplets. That is the same handling problem turmerones present. This is a formulation route and says nothing about what the turmerones then do.
Ginger and turmeric rhizomes are close botanical relatives with overlapping volatile sesquiterpene profiles. The pairing is long-standing in cooking and in herbal practice. What is documented is the co-use and the chemical overlap, not a demonstrated combined effect.
A meal carrying long-chain fats triggers bile release and mixed micelle formation, which is the route by which an oil-soluble sesquiterpene crosses the gut wall. Co-dosing with a fat source is a practical way to avoid the worst-case absorption scenario. The pairing is about delivery, not about a shared biological target.

Turmerones are the main aromatic oil compounds in turmeric root, they give it that fresh turmeric smell, and chemically they're unrelated to the yellow curcumin pigments.
Standard curcumin extraction strips out the essential oil, so a high-curcumin extract usually has little to no turmerone unless it's been added back in on purpose.
Being fat-soluble and volatile, turmerones don't dissolve well in water, get absorbed via fat-related pathways, and can evaporate or oxidize away if the material is stored warm or left exposed to air.
How much turmerone ends up in a turmeric product varies a lot with the plant variety, where it's grown, how it's distilled, and how old it is, so two products can differ several times over in this fraction while both still meet the same curcumin spec.
