The iron in green leaf material is non-heme iron, which is absorbed less readily than heme iron and is sensitive to what surrounds it in the meal. Young cereal leaf tissue carries lutein and beta-carotene alongside chlorophyll as part of the photosynthetic pigment complement. Adding an isolated lutein preparation stacks on a small dietary contribution rather than duplicating it. Because carotenoids are fat-soluble, both need a meal containing fat to be absorbed.
Barley grass juice powder is made by pressing out the juice and discarding the pulp, so it carries little insoluble fibre and is a weak fermentation substrate on its own. Greens formulas commonly add inulin or another prebiotic fibre to supply what the juice route removes. The pairing corrects a compositional gap rather than creating an interaction.
