Cascara sagrada's anthraquinone glycosides are converted by colonic bacteria into compounds that stimulate colonic motility and reduce water reabsorption. The two routes are independent, so combining them increases the total effect on transit. That also means the combination can overshoot into cramping and loose stool more easily than either alone.
Magnesium salts draw water into the bowel lumen osmotically. Cascara acts on the colonic wall instead. Stacking them raises the chance of watery stool and fluid loss, and repeated fluid loss is itself a route to potassium depletion. The pairing is worth flagging rather than recommending.
Anthraquinone laxatives increase stool water and speed transit, and both raise potassium losses through the gut. Low potassium in turn slows bowel smooth muscle, which can push a person toward using more laxative. Potassium status is the thing to watch during any extended use, not something to correct by adding more stimulant.
