Both oils are built around linalool and its acetate ester, so blending them raises the total dose of the same two molecules rather than adding a new one. Aromatherapy blends pair them for that reason. Read it as constituent overlap, since no trial has compared the blend against either oil alone.
Clary sage essential oil is a concentrated terpene mixture that is irritating undiluted on skin. A medium chain triglyceride carrier lets a small percentage be spread evenly and measured. This is formulation practice and carries no implication about effect.
Chamomile and clary sage appear together in long-standing calming preparations, chamomile contributing apigenin and bisabolol and clary sage contributing linalyl acetate. The combination is documented as practice rather than tested as a formula. Any calming impression from an inhaled blend is difficult to separate from expectation.
Valerian preparations and linalool-rich oils both lean toward sedation, so stacking them can produce more drowsiness than either was intended to cause. This matters most around driving and around anything else sedating. Count it as a caution rather than a benefit.
Melatonin shifts sleep timing through its own receptor route, while an inhaled linalool-rich oil contributes a general calming impression. Used together the drowsiness can stack. The two act by different routes, so this is an additive caution and not evidence of a designed pairing.
Caffeine blocks adenosine signalling and raises alertness, which pulls against whatever calming impression an aromatic blend produces. Taking both simply muddies what a person is feeling. Worth naming because evening aromatherapy is often used alongside daytime stimulants.
