Oleanolic and ursolic acid from the fruit and the silymarin flavonolignans are both conjugated by glucuronidation and sulfation before excretion. Loading two phenolic-heavy extracts at once puts more demand on the same conjugation capacity. This is a pharmacokinetic observation about competition for a shared route, not evidence that the pair works better together.
Oleanolic and ursolic acid are lipophilic pentacyclic triterpenes with very low aqueous solubility, which is the main reason their oral absorption is poor and erratic. Taking a triterpene-enriched fraction with a lipid vehicle raises the fraction that stays dissolved through the gut. The glycoside portion of the fruit, being water soluble, does not need this and is unaffected.
The secoiridoid and phenylethanoid glycosides in the fruit act as chain-breaking phenolic antioxidants in vitro, and ascorbate can regenerate phenoxyl radicals back to the parent phenol. The chemistry is settled in model systems. Whether it happens at the concentrations reached in the body after an oral dose is not established.
