Sarsaparilla and licorice appear together in old root-beverage and tonic formulas, partly for taste and partly for foam. Both carry saponin or saponin-like triterpenes, so the surfactant effect stacks. Licorice brings its own consideration in that glycyrrhizin affects mineralocorticoid signalling and can raise blood pressure at sustained intake, which the pairing does nothing to offset. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice avoids that specific issue.
Saponins bind cholesterol and bile acids in the intestine, and plant sterols compete with cholesterol for space in mixed micelles. The interaction is luminal, so timing solves it.
Sarsaparilla, dandelion and burdock roots appear together across Western herbal tonic tradition and in root beverages. The pairing is historical and gustatory rather than pharmacologically demonstrated. Dandelion contributes bitterness and its own diuretic reputation. Neither plant changes how the other is absorbed.
