A rodent study assessed jambolan fruit extract with and without choline against aluminium-induced toxicity, measuring brain and biochemical markers. The combination arm was included specifically because the two were expected to act through partly separate routes. This is animal work on markers rather than outcomes, and it says nothing yet about people.

Jambolan + White mulberry DNJBoth act on post-meal glucose, mulberry through intestinal alpha-glucosidase inhibition.

Deoxynojirimycin in white mulberry inhibits intestinal alpha-glucosidase and blunts the post-meal glucose rise. Jambolan seed extracts have been reported to inhibit the same enzyme class in laboratory assays. Two agents on one enzyme means the post-meal effect can be larger than expected, and the usual consequence of over-inhibition is gas and bloating from unabsorbed carbohydrate.

Jambolan + IronJambolan is tannin-dense and tannins bind non-heme iron in the gut lumen.

The astringency of jambolan fruit and seed comes from a high tannin content, and tannin binding of non-heme iron is settled chemistry. An iron supplement swallowed with a jambolan preparation is presented to the intestine in less soluble form. Two hours of spacing removes the issue.

Jambolan + Urolithin AJambolan carries ellagitannins, the dietary precursor that colonic bacteria convert into urolithins.

Ellagitannins are not absorbed intact. Gut bacteria hydrolyse them to ellagic acid and then to urolithins, and conversion capacity differs so much between people that a large minority produce almost none. Jambolan supplies precursor. Direct urolithin supplementation bypasses the bacterial step entirely.

Jambolan + Vitamin CAscorbate and acidification stabilise the anthocyanin pigments in jambolan fruit during processing.

The deep purple colour of jambolan comes from anthocyanins, which degrade at neutral pH and with oxygen exposure. Acidification is routine in handling anthocyanin-rich fruit powders. This is a stability point about the product rather than a claim about what the pairing does in a person.

Jambolan + ProbioticsThe polyphenol fraction is largely unabsorbed and is transformed by colonic bacteria into the metabolites that actually circulate.

Anthocyanins and ellagitannins from jambolan mostly reach the colon intact, where bacteria degrade them into smaller phenolic acids and urolithins.
