Dan zhu ye and gan cao appear together in classical heat-clearing formulas, with licorice in its traditional harmonising role of moderating the harsher members of a formula. This is formula architecture rather than a demonstrated pharmacological interaction. Licorice carries its own consideration through glycyrrhizin's effect on mineralocorticoid signalling and potassium, which matters more here than the pairing itself.
Lophatherum is used traditionally as a diuretic, and any sustained rise in urine output carries potassium along with the water. Over days of use, potassium intake becomes the thing worth attending to, especially alongside prescribed diuretics. This follows from how the kidney handles increased flow, not from a study of this plant.
Glycyrrhizin inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2, which drives potassium loss and sodium retention. Pairing it with a diuretic botanical pushes potassium in the same downward direction from two different mechanisms. In classical formulas the licorice dose is small and the duration short, which is the context that pairing comes from.
Both contribute polyphenols with antioxidant behaviour in vitro. Combining them raises total polyphenol intake without any established interaction between the two. Antioxidant activity measured in a test tube is not the same as an effect in a person, and that distinction applies to both members of this pair.
Both are drunk as infusions and both carry flavones in the apigenin family. The pairing is a beverage convention rather than a documented combination. Nothing about it predicts more than the sum of two mild teas.
